Tips For A Successful Video Shoot

Client Preparation

HouseTwelve has years of experience working with local businesses and on-screen talent that aren’t professional actors. We know it’s not easy. That’s why we’re BEHIND the camera! So we try to take as much of the load off our clients as possible. Being prepared to provide our clients with a quick makeup touchup, bottled waters, or catering on the day of the shoot means a few less things to put on their shoulders.

But there are a few things that our clients can do themselves to prepare for the shoot.

Look Good, Feel Good

Bring 2-3 outfits to the set. Avoid fine prints such as stripes and checks (larger prints can be fine). A variety of colors will help ensure you stand out from your background. Some black is okay, but avoid wearing all black. Also be sure to avoid logos. If you’re shooting on a green screen, avoid wearing green.

Be careful with jewelry. Some watches, bracelets and necklaces can introduce noise into audio recording if you’re wearing a lav mic.

Avoid alcohol, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep. Arriving on set feeling fresh and well rested can help the whole day go smoother.

Have a makeup plan. If you’ve hired a makeup artist for your shoot, be sure to confirm how you should arrive to set. A clean and moisturized face is standard for full face makeup, but touchups and finishing can vary. For women doing your own makeup, be sure to bring lipstick for touchups.

Be Prepared

Practice your script. Practice aloud, several times and in front of an audience if possible. If you don’t have a script, be sure you understand what’s expected of you.

Inform all members of your staff that the video shoot is happening. Nobody wants to be caught off guard when cameras are rolling. Of course not everyone will be on camera, but in the event that we need extras, staff should be prepared.

Eat

This is it’s own category, because food is so important! Everybody on set needs to be fueled to function. Whether we are ordering pizza or your company is providing catering, know the plan and convey any dietary requirements.
